Level Up Showcase has partnered with EGLX to create some seriously incredible opportunities for aspiring young developers!

Level Up 2016 is on April 6th (levelupshowcase.com). Teams of student designers display their games, and a winner is chosen in each category: Technical Innovation, Artistic Achievement, Overall Game Design, and People’s Choice.

1. All four will show off their creations throughout EGLX weekend.
2. Then they’ll be recruited for the Accel Bootcamp, a top-secret program leading up to EGLX, designed to train them for:
3. The Pitch Competition (more info below). Impress the judges, and they might go home with some prize money to get those ideas off the ground…
4. That’s still not all! They’ll ALSO get to showcase their games at OCE Discovery, on May 9-10 (ocediscovery.com), courtesy of Ontario Centres of Excellence.

The Student Design Expo will culminate in a pitch competition: 4 winning teams will try to convince our panel of judges to contribute funding to their game. No, really. They’ll make their case, show that they can handle the responsibility of following creative concepts through to completion, and we’ll help make their game a reality.

For us, this is one of the most exciting parts of EGLX – giving back to the community that made Enthusiast Gaming possible in the first place. We too know how it feels to be brimming with great ideas but lack the financial backing to actually go for it.

Many of us will sink hours upon hours into a single game, but how often do we really think about the people who make them? Video game developers are just as praiseworthy as their spellbinding creations, and EGLX will celebrate the works of indie and AAA developers alike.

We are bringing together some of the most exciting local and international game makers to show off their latest works. Some are finished products; others offer a sneak peek at upcoming projects.

Ever wanted to meet the folks behind your favorite games, or ask teams about their development process and style? Now’s your chance!

Reality is so boring, right? It’s just there ALL THE TIME. Don’t you want to try something else for a change?

We welcome you on Saturday, April 30, to a 2-hour VR demonstration with 10 groundbreaking studios working on virtual reality projects. Take one giant leap into the future of gaming with the best VR demos Ontario has to offer.

  • Techno Lust: A futuristic cyber-punk adventure with story-driven gameplay. Save the world from its oppressors, or stay at home and watch (virtual) TV. The choice is yours.
  • Fists of Fire: Dodge, Shoot and Block attacks in this 3D game that uses your hands to generate powerful fireballs. Fists of Fire uses the Leap Motion (hand and finger VR controller) in combination with the Oculus Rift to create a physically immersive experience.
  • Mushroom Ball: In Mushroom Ball, you are the leader of your own Mushroom Kingdom (no relation). Roll around in a Jurassic World-style ball, eat mushrooms to survive, jump across platforms and collect as many mushroom points as you can!
  • Modbox: A sandbox physics VR game. Generate objects out of thin air, then make them interact with each other – the rest is up to you.
  • Secret Location: An Emmy Award-winning digital agency that uses VR to create compelling stories and experiences.

And get in line early – it’s going to be packed.

Independent gaming continues to grow at an alarming speed, and with so many people trying out so many new titles, we can’t help but get a little competitive. But these tournaments are special: the developers of the games themselves will be commentating!

Our first tournament game will be Runbow, 13AM Games’ inventive Platformer/Racer hybrid. Fall behind and face the horrors of very temporary death.

You will NOT need a competitor’s pass to participate in these small-scale tournaments – just sign up at the developer’s booths. Spaces are limited!
